Get Sported Summer Sports Event at Brislington Enterprise College 2006Following a very successful pioneering programme in 2005 ‘Get Sported’ is now looking forward to the start of its second year. ‘Get Sported’ is a program for local youths, both male and female, with the vision of equipping them with moral life skills using sport as a vehicle.
The fall out of unoccupied youth is evident for all to see on the streets of the local area. Smashed bus shelters and looted telephone boxes accompany underage drinking and widespread drug use. Society by and large regards these youths as a menace but the organisers of ‘Get Sported’ would argue that they are simply misdirected. Many come from broken homes and have suffered abuse and neglect, which they then pass onto others. The solution to the problem is not necessarily tighter security but to build bridges between the youths and the local community. Get Sported is a two week event from the beginning of August that incorporates multiple sporting activities that include Football, Cricket, Touch Rugby, Volleyball, Basketball and a Fitness program. All events have professionally qualified coaches working alongside volunteers of the Carmel Christian Centre. Carmel have linked up with other churches in and around the area as well as receiving help from other parts of the country and the US. This year is already looking to be a huge success as it is anticipated that there will be between 50 – 200 young people taking part every day with an expected audience turnout of over two thousand people. There will be trophies, prizes and certificates provided for the winners and Adriano Basso (Bristol City’s Goal Keeper) will be helping out with the event along with a core group of professional sports coaches. There is also a youth camp being held the following week for all those who are interested. This will cost £100 per head although sponsorship is available. Stancold Plc has a keen interest in issues that effect the local community and we are delighted to have been given the opportunity to support the ‘Get Sported’ initiative. We hope that the event is a huge success and wish it the best of luck in the future. There are still places available so if you are interested in taking part please contact John on the details below. The Get Sported event is reliant on the donations and sponsorship it receives from the local community and any further support will be gratefully received. If you would like to make a contribution and help with the continued enhancement of the lives of these young people please contact John Pearce on the following details.
